GIMME GIMME DISCO | BOAT SERIES RECAP

Traveled to Boston from Vermont, shot the show, drove back home the same night and delivered an edit in 48 hours. The boat series of Gimme Gimme Disco are just over two hours long, meaning that I have to show up with a solid shot list and focused mindset. Not only do I have limited time to shoot what I need, but the daylight fades quickly turning the shoot from golden hour to complete darkness resulting in a library full of differently lit shots.
To ensure I was efficient with my time, the first thing I did when stepping on the boat was assess all possible entries, exits, paths, shot locations, etc. It’s absolutely crucial to carry out this step due to large crowds being nearly impossible to get through in a timely manner. I would shoot certain shots from the front of the crowd where the DJ booth was, then walk underneath the main level of the boat to the other end and shoot other content from the back of the boat. Then once I cleared both sides for some time, I would travel throughout the crowd and get more up close and personal, shooting entirely handheld (which this entire shoot was done handheld).
The great thing about these shows are the attendees excitement to be on camera. Going through my footage I realized just how many intimate shots I had. I wanted viewers to feel connected to the diverse crowd. I made sure to balance out the intimate shots with a few over the shoulder angles and wide shots. I wanted the first few seconds of the video to be attention-grabbing. In today’s age of social media, you usually only have three seconds before a viewer decides if they’ll watch or keep scrolling. After that, it’s about taking them on the ride that is Gimme Gimme Disco!
